A December 2023 aerial photo of a river delta protruding into the shallow Java Sea, just east of Jakarta, Indonesia. Sediment discharge from the volcanic interior of Java island has enabled the delta to grow seawards. Plumes of silt and mud are seen discharging into the shallow Java Sea via a number of river channels. As the delta progrades into the sea, Javanese farmers quickly convert newly created land into farmland, mostly aquacultural activities nearer the sea. Older floodplains are converted to rice paddies once levels of salinity have dropped.
