During Prophase there is a coiling of the long Chromatin Threads forming distinct CHROMOSOMES that can be seen with the light microscope. This image shows developing chromosomes. Later in prophase the Nuclear Envelope will break down. The chromosomes are actually duplicated and are made up of identical units called sister chromatids.
