RABAT, MOROCCO: A young Moroccan looks at a girl in bathing suit as others enjoy sun bathing on the beach in Rabat, 04 July 2004. A sermon by Imam Redouane Benchekroun, a Muslim fundamentalist prayer leader, who said a woman's place is in the home, has raised hackles in the media and political circles in Morocco, which prides itself on its liberal form of Islam. Islamic-leaning newspaper Attajdid, 02 July defended Bencheroun, accusing the iman's critics of trying to "muzzle Muslim theologians". "Are Koranic verses that call on people not to go around naked backwards and inward-looking?". questioned the paper, which also lashed out at "magazines in the Arab world which publish photos of nude women and transform Morocco into a brothel".
