Pioneering Radio Station 8XK

3/15/1924-Wilkinsburg, PA. A man using radio equipment at Frank Conrad’s pioneering radio station, 8XK. From this little set, the world's first commercial broadcasts were transmitted, marking the birth of a great industry. It was located in Conrad's garage in Wilkinsburg, PA. It served as a backup when Conrad's employer, Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co., broadcast the returns of the 1920 presidential election from a new, more powerful station, after they were relayed by phone of the office of J.C. McQuiston in the Pittsburgh Post Editorial rooms. The new station became the pioneering station KDKA.
