Indonesia Tackles Rising Waters At Jakarta's Sinking City

As much of the northern coastline in Jakarta lies at or below sea level, rain, and floodwater often needs the help of massive pumps to reach the sea. Jakarta, one of the world's most densely populated cities, is also one of the fastest-sinking cities in the world under the weight of out-of-control development, over use of ground water and rising sea levels caused by global warming which have threatened the mostly poor residents of Jakarta's northern coast with the loss of their homes. Experts say that if nothing is done, parts of Jakarta will sink five metres by the year 2025.
