A view of Cernavoda nuclear plant in Cernavoda city August 12, 2026. Romania began on August 13, 2026 the complete shutdown of its only nuclear plant after water levels in the Danube, used to cool the site, fell to a record low, the national nuclear energy company said. It is the plant's first shutdown since a 2003 drought, as unprecedented heatwaves and rain shortages across Europe this year have caused the level of the Danube -- whose waters help cool the plant -- to plummet. Alternative sources, including from wind power generation, as well as imports, are expected to cover electricity supply, it said, reiterating an appeal for "responsible consumption".
