UNITED KINGDOM - JULY 03: Travel in 1855. Oil painting by Cuthbert Hamilton Ellis, made in 1951, for a British Railways, London Midlands Region (BR/LMR) carriage print. The railway, which was engineered by George Stephenson (1781-1848), was built between 1837 and 1845 with the twin objective of extending the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway and providing railway access to the northern part of the West Cumberland coalfield. The locomotive is depicted pulling a passenger train. This was one of a series of paintings commissioned for carriage prints by George Dow, advertising manager of BR/LMR during the 1950s.
