The family of late president Mainassara on April 13, 2014 announced they had filed a complaint to the Ecowas Justice Court in Abuja, Nigeria, for murder in order to obtain the opening of an inquiry on his death. Mainassara was killed on April 9, 1999 at a military base in Niamey by soldiers of his personal guard led by then junta leader Commandant Wanke.
