16th February 1877: The Electoral Commission of 1877 holds a secret session by candlelight in Washington, DC. The commission was set up to decide the result of the controversial presidential election between Rutherford B Hayes and Samuel J Tilden, and resulted in the 22 contested votes from Florida, Louisiana, Oregon and South Carolina being eventually awarded to Hayes.
