South African Wineries 2022 Harvest

Wineries have reported a high quality but smaller crop for the 2022 harvest, characterized by cooler than usual weather conditions from winter to mid-December 2021, which resulted in later than normal budding, flowering, veraison and ripening, followed by warm periods through January 2022 which accelerated ripening. Wine industry experts also reported that late seasonal rain and hail showers caused crop losses in some regions due to fungal diseases and rot, while in other areas heatwaves caused sunburn damage to the grapes.
