A small group of Beijing residents walk
A small group of Beijing residents walk in February 1967 in downtown Beijing, past a huge poster showing the Chairman Mao Zedong, during the "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution". The poster reads (at right): "We have to be good soldiers of Mao Zedong, we have to listen his words, we have to follow his instructions and read his books". Since the the cultural revolution was launched in May 1966 at Beijing University, Mao's aim was to recapture power after the failure of the "Great Leap Forward". The movement was directed against those "party leaders in authority taking the capitalist road". (Photo credit should read JEAN VINCENT/AFP via Getty Images)
