Paul Robeson Appearing Before a Congressional Committee
(Original Caption) Singer Paul Robeson is shown as he appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee in Washington. He pleaded Constitutional immunity when queried about alleged affiliations and associations but blossomed into full Robeson vocal form in denunciation of America and the congressional Committee. He accused members of the committee of being unpatriotic and Un-American and told them, "You ought to be ashamed of yourselves." As a result of the hearing, contempt of Congress proceedings were begun against Robeson. (Photo by Bettmann Archive/Getty Images)
