Silhouetted against historical buildings, Mark Ellinger photographs some of his favorite architecture in the "Tenderloin" district of San Francisco on March 18, 2012. He was a successful recording engineer before bipolar disorder struck. He lived on the streets for 6 years as a heroin addict. He almost died after shooting up tainted drugs. Ten weeks in SF General snapped him out of that. He began living in one hellhole SRO after another. Then one day, the guy across the hall was throwing away a onemegapixel digital camera. He took it. Now, he has reinvented himself as the photographer and historian of the most notorious neighborhood in this graceful city. He's artist in residence at Intersection for the Arts. And his is the first story told in the new play, "Tenderloin." (Photo by Gina Ferazzi/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images)
