Charles Lyell
circa 1865: Scottish geologist Sir Charles Lyell (1797 - 1875), who was born in Kinnordy and discovered a taste for geology while studying law at Oxford University. His first book, 'Principles of Geology' (1830 - 1833), altered the course of contemporary scientific thought by suggesting that the forces which had created geological features could still be at work. He also published 'The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man' which adopted a rational approach to Darwin's theories. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
