Rio Tinto Mining Announcement
KARRATHA, AUSTRALIA - JUNE 01: Rio Tinto Iron Ore Parker Point export loading facility is seen as part of the mining activities of British-Australian mining and resources company Rio Tinto, at Dampier in Western Australia's Pilbara region. The multinational has recently signed Indigenous Land Use Agreements with five Aboriginal language groups, the traditional owners of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The agreements provide Rio Tinto with resource access mainly for iron ore mining expansion, whilst compensating local communities by providing jobs, business start up assistance and ongoing financial advice to improve the wellbeing of local Aboriginals for the next 40 years. Rio's Iron Ore group is the largest private employer of Aboriginal people in Australia, currently employing 891 people of Aboriginal descent, with over AUD250 million of contracts awarded to Pilbara Aboriginal businesses over 2009 and 2010. .
