Women Empowerment In An AIDS Ridden Society

KIBERA SLUM, NAIROBI, KENYA - DECEMBER 2006: Rights workshops and self-empowerment classes for young women and girls in the sprawling Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya December 2006. These young women have very little protection and even less awareness of their rights as women. These classes are women teaching women about their bodies, their right to say no, how to avoid dangerous situations, AIDS, safe sex education and financial empowerment through savings workshops. HIV rates in Kenya are now at 5 to 1 in terms of women to men, indicating a strong feminisation of the disease. As a result, groups of Kenyan HIV positive women are banding together to offer each other education and support.
