PERU-VIOLENCE-VICTIMS-FUNERAL

Residents, mostly peasants of Culluchaca --a small rural community of 700 families living at 3,800 meters above sea level in the Andes-- mourn for their loved ones outside the Huanta cathedral in Ayacucho, Peru on May 9, 2018 after attending a mass in which they received the remains of 23 of their relatives, recovered from mass graves and identified with DNA, after being disappeared since the mid-1980s. - The remains which have been found in a common grave, belong to victims of the violent internal war held in Peru between the bloody Maoist guerrilla group, the Shining Path and the Peruvian armed forces, during two decades (1980-2000). Two weeks ago, Peru raised to 20,329 the official count of missing persons, a third more than in the previous one.
