Asylum Applicants With Uncertain Chance Of Approval Receive Orientation Course

BERLIN, GERMANY - NOVEMBER 11: Recently-arrived immigrants, including from countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran, attend a first orientation class for asylum applicants whose chances of receiving longer-term asylum are slim at a classroom of the Johanniter charity on November 11, 2016 in Berlin, Germany. Germany has taken in approximately one million refugees and migrants since last year, and while those from war-torn Syria have a strong chance of receiving asylum, including the right to stay and work, others, especially those who are deemed to be economic migrants, will likely eventually be turned away. The German government has nonetheless pledged certain integration measures to this latter group as part of its "Meseberg Declaration on Integration" signed last May. In the first orientation course students receive a mix of German-language introduction and an explanation of practical aspects of living in Germany, such as what to expect when visiting a doctor, how to deal with bureaucracy and norms of the roles of men and women in German society.
