Malindi, KENYA: TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY BEATRICE DEBUT Recent picture taken, 21, June 2007 shows a butterfly emerging from a caterpillar pupae bought from local butterfly farmers for export to mainly Great Britain and the US at a centre near Arabuko Sokoke forest within Malindi, approximately 600 kilometres southeast of Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Butterfly farming and trade in their pupae, initiated about 14 years ago through a UNDP funded project called 'Kipepeo' has not only contributed to improving the lifestyle's of the about 100,000 villagers living within and near the tropical forest along the coastal strip through increased incomes, but created awareness of the importance of conserving the forest and its ecosystems where the much sought after butterfly species thrive.
