Ranchers Pine Gulch Fire

DE BEQUE, COLORADO - AUGUST 27: Rancher Dick Latham looks over the valley at the burned landscape near their land from the Pine Gulch Fire on August 27, 2020 near De Beque, Colorado. The Latham's family have ranched in South Dry Fork for 70 years and four generations. The Lathams own 250 head of cattle and 2,500 acres of land in South Dry Fork. The family has lost practically all of this acreage, both their own and the BLM land they leased, to the Pine Gulch Fire. "u201cEvery mountain as far as the eye can see has burned. Mountains and valleys both,"u201d said Latham recently. "u201cEntire mountain sides have burned off. Horse Mountain, Cow Mountain, Kimball Mountain. Kimball Creek, Roan Creek, Garfield Mesa, 16 Road. They have all burned,"u201d referring to the many mountains that surround his property. He continued "Every one of these mountains has memories for us. Every hill has a story,"u201d says Latham. My wife and I, my kids, my grandkids. We all have memories on these hillsides he explained. We have places where we have bagged our first elk, hidden spots where we played among the scrub oak and rocks as kids thinking we were hiding from our parents only to find out they hid in the same spots when they were kids. Hikes we have taken with the grandchildren to show them the land we call home. Many, many memories."u201d With uncertainty in the future for the devastated land and where they will put their cattle, Latham said "u201cOne thing you find out about people here is that they are realists. They don"u2019t sit around and say "u2018poor me"u2019. They say ok what do we do now? How do we move forward. God has a plan for us somewhere."u201d "u201cI have hay to haul, cows to water, land to reseed and fences to rebuild,"u201d says Dick Latham. We just have to move forward."u201d (Photo by Helen H.
