Portrait of Langley Collyer Sitting on Front Steps
(Original Caption) Public appearances of the Collyer Brothers, famed hermits of Fifth Avenue, were rare enough to be classified in the feathered frog category. This photograph was made about 18 months ago when Langley donned a battered cap to sit and take the air on the steps of the mansion where he and brother Homer lived in seclusion for 39 years. Last week Homer was found dead in the junk-packed house. Police are seeking Langley through the maze of trash that jams the mansion from cellar to attic.
