BRAZIL-LULA DA SILVA-SUPPORTERS-PROTEST

Protesters linked to the Landless Workers Movement (MST) and Via Campesina march in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, in defence of democracy and the right of former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to be a candidate in the next national elections, on January 22, 2018. Lula da Silva was sentenced in July 2017 to 9.5 years behind bars after being convicted of corruption in Brazil's huge "Car Wash" graft scandal. The court in Porto Alegre said it will rule on his appeal on January 24.
