Political Cartoon About the Annexation of Cuba

A 1868 political cartoon depicting Uncle Sam and William H. Seward, the secretary of state in the Lincoln and Johnson administrations, discussing the annexation of Cuba under the allegory of a giant pear (Cuba) hanging over a garden wall from a tree on the other side (i.e. Spain). Seward is for cutting the pear down, but Uncle Sam says to just wait, and the pear will "fall into our grounds" when it is ripe enough. As it turned out, the U.S. renounced all claims of direct sovereignty over Cuba after liberating it from Spain thirty years later in the Spanish-American War.
