A piece of red ochre with a deliberately engraved
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA: A piece of red ochre with a deliberately engraved design which is the oldest known evidence for the creation of a complex image is pictured here at the Iziko/South African Museum in Cape Town 23 January 2002. The piece, made around 77,000 years ago was discovered in Blombos Cave near Stilbaai about 300 kilometres from Cape Town. The object poses the question as to wether it is an example of the beginnings of art. The engraved face is approximately 6 centimetres.
