Picture taken 29 March 1967 of the burning Torrey Canyon' s remains after a decision was made to bomb the tanker. During three days, more than 1160 bombs, 3,000 gallons of napalm and 16 rockets were aimed at the target of the wrecked oil tanker. On 18 March 1967, owing to a navigational error, the Torrey Canyon struck Pollard's Rock in the Seven Stones reef between the Isles of Scilly and Land's End, Cornwall, causing major environmental damage on the Cornish and French coasts. Around 120,000 tons of crude oil which spilled out, killing about 200,000 birds and facing ruin to the holiday industry. Owned by the Liberian Barracuda Tanker Corporation, a subsidiary of American Union Oil Company, the Torrey Canyon carried 129 857 tons of BP's crude oil.
