Exterior Crime Scene of Large Home
(Original Caption) Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York: Reenactment Of Prowler's Story---At left is a diagrammatic photo of the William Woodward, Jr., home at Oyster Bay showing the tree from which Paul Wirths told police he leaped onto the first floor roof over Mrs. Woodward's bedroom the morning William Woodward died. Wirths, a German alien who previously denied being at the Woodward estate at the time the wealthy sportsman was killed, now says he was on the property at the moment when Mrs. Woodward fired the fatal two blasts from a double-barreled shotgun. In the photo at right, an officer checking Wirth's changed story, stands at the door leading into the upper floor of the Woodward home. Wirths says he had just forced open the door when he heard the shots. "I ram and jumped off the roof, (officer at right demonstrates), and hit a gravel drive," said Wirths.
