Gathering to mark expansion of Colorados Sand Creek Massacre historic site.
EADS, CO - OCTOBER 5: Northern Cheyenne tribal chiefs Anthony Spottedwolf, left, and his father Patrick Spottedwolf, right, listen to remarks during a gathering at the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic site on October 5, 2022 at the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site near Eads, Colorado. Colorados Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site will more than double in size to cover more than 6,500 acres of shortgrass prairie-a broadening federal project in tandem in tandem with tribal leaders from the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes. The historic site marks one of the bloodiest assaults on native people in American history. The Northern and Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes consider this land near the southeastern Colorado town of Eads sacred. The expanded site, to be managed by the National Park Service, is intended to improve recreational opportunities on public lands, better interpret history and protect watersheds and wildlife. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, Secretary Deb Haaland, who is a member of the Pueblo of Laguna tribe and the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary, Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera, and Governor Reggie Wassana, of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes were among the political figures in attendance. William Walks Along, a tribal administrator with the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, Matthew Wallowingbull, with the Northern Arapaho Tribe and Charles Chuck Same III, director of NPS were also in attendance.
