US military vehicles roll down the road

US military vehicles roll down the road 30 June 2003 in Samarra, some 175 kms north of Baghdad, on the way to toppled leader Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, a Sunni Muslim belt where support for his regime was strongest. The area was crawling today with US military who have brought in their most technologically advanced units in the hunt for members of the toppled regime in Operation Desert Sidewinder, which started yesterday, and which the US army is hoping will wipe out Fedayeen militia fighters and diehards from the ousted Baath party. In the background is the mosque of Imam Hassan al-Askari. AFP PHOTO/Marwan NAAMANI (Photo credit should read MARWAN NAAMANI/AFP via Getty Images)
