The United States launched its invasion on October 7, 2001 in a bid to oust the Taliban from power and hunt for former Al-Qaeda militant leader Osama bin Laden, who had been given sanctuary by the Taliban, in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington DC that were carried out by Al-Qaeda operatives.
