Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren (1782 - 1862), the 8th President of the United States of America (1837 - 1841). A Democrat, he helped to establish the Democratic Party. Secretary of State in 1829 - 1831 and vice-president from 1833 - 1837, he was President during an economic crisis. As a result of his policies the depression worsened, and he lost the 1840 election.
