(Original Caption) 11/20/57-New York: Leonard Bernstein, left, has been named musical director of the New York Philharmonic for the next three years, succeeding Dimitri Mitropoulos, right. He will be the first American-born conductor and second youngest to hold the post. Mr. Mitropoulos who announced his successor said he was not resigning but "abdicating with joy." SEE NOTES
