Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Holds State Elections

SCHWERIN, GERMANY - SEPTEMBER 04: Lead candidate Leif-Erik Holm of the Alternative for Germany (Alternative fuer Deutschland, or AfD), a newcomer, populist party that also attracts right-wing voters, wave to the media after elections results gave the AfD 21,5 % of the vote in state elections in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on September 4, 2016 in Schwerin, Germany. While the German Social Democrats (SPD) came in a very strong first place, the German Christian Democrats (CDU), who had been neck and neck with the SPD in polls in weeks before the elections, lost ground in what many see as a reflection of declining support for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is also CDU chairwoman. Meanwhile the AfD will certainly be a major opposition force in the state parliament. (Photo by Carsten Koall/Getty Images)
