Saltwater intrusion in Louisiana
BURAS, LOUISIANA - OCTOBER 4, 2023: Kelli Marinovich fills her dog's bowl with boxed water at her home in Buras Louisiana on October 4, 2023. As a brutal drought continues to cripple the flow of the Mississippi River, a mass of salt water from the Gulf of Mexico is slowly working its way upriver and ever closer to New Orleans imperiling the drinking water supply for roughly a million people, posing health risks to those with kidney problems and high blood pressure and threatening to corrode everything from industrial equipment to home appliances. In Plaquemines Parish, thousands of residents have been living on bottled water and dealing with the impacts of saltwater intrusion for more than 3 months already.
