Kaneko Kuwada places Japanese rice cakes

SAN DIEGO, UNITED STATES: Kaneko Kuwada places Japanese rice cakes called mochi on a table to help them cool off, 14 December, 2003, at the Buddhist Temple in San Diego, CA. The traditional method of making the mochi has been revived by the Japanese-American community at the temple, where glutinous rice is steamed, pounded with mallets and formed into small cakes and then eaten during the New Years' holiday. The year-end activity was customarily done in villages in Japan, but is done here in the church parking lot and classrooms and begins with 1,300 pounds of rice which makes 1,900 pounds of the mochi which is sold to congregation and community members. Most mochi available is machine made and not pounded in the traditional way. AFP PHOTO/Stan HONDA (Photo credit should read STAN HONDA/AFP via Getty Images)
