Professional Golfer Bill Spiller

(Original Caption) January 21, 1952-San Diego, California: Professional golfer Bill Spiller sits dejectedly at the first tee as golfers start their rounds in the San Diego Open Tournament from which Spiller was ruled intelligible because of PGA rules. Joe Louis revealed today that seven negroes will enter the Phoenix Open Golf Tournament-the first PGA competition ever to welcome negro professionals, Louis himself won his fight to play in the San Diego Tournament, but Spiller was not permitted to play along with him. Last Saturday the PGA changed its rules to permit negroes to play if invited by local sponsors.
