India houses over 2500 varieties of organically grown brinjal varieties and brinjal is a popular vegetable. A small annual shrub the Brinjal or the egg plant is in the midst of a raging controversy in India, as the government does a fine balancing act on whether to grant final permission to introduce a genetically modified variety of this plant as the first genetically modified vegetable crop in India or not.
