UNITED KINGDOM - MARCH 13: Illustrated plate taken from Dickinsons� 'Comprehensive Pictures of The Great Exhibition' (1854). The exhibits shown include a horse�s head, above which is displayed a dioptric revolving lighthouse reflector mechanism by Chance Brothers & Co. Banners hang from the balconies bearing the arms of cities of Britain, with York at the front on the right. Admiring these exhibits are Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and family. The Crystal Palace was built to house the 'Great Exhibition of the Works of the Industry of all Nations', conceived by Prince Albert (1819-1861). It was the first large-scale prefabricated ferrovitreous (iron and glass) structure and was designed by the landscape designer Joseph Paxton (1801-1865).
