Henry Wheeler Shaw
circa 1875: Henry Wheeler Shaw (1818-1885). American humorist and lecturer. A former explorer, coal miner before he settled in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. as an auctioneer and real estate dealer. From 1860 he began to write under the pseudonym, Josh Billings, humorous sketches in rural dialect and became a popular lecturer. His works include 'Josh Billings: His Sayings,' 1869.
