Mayors Assassinated In Philippines
Heavily armed police officers walk past the bullet riddled vehicle of General Tinio Mayor Ferdinand Bote, who was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on motorcycles, in a police impound lot in Cabanatuan city, Nueva Ecija province, Philippines, July 4, 2018. The Philippines' Commission on Human Rights renewed calls for an end to a "culture of violence" following the assassination of two municipal mayors in a span of two days. In many of his speeches, President Rodrigo Duterte has constantly threatened local officials who are engaged in the illegal drug trade. Ten municipal mayors have been killed in the country by either police or unknown assailants ever since Duterte took office two years ago.
