Horses Pulling Carriage with Queen Wilhelmina's Casket
(Original Caption) Funeral In White. The Hague, Netherlands: White draped horses and hearse take remains of the late Princess Wilhelmina through streets of The Hague for burial in the New Church at Delft. More than two million persons, some paying up to two weeks' wages for a better view from a shop window, witnessed the funeral of the former Queen, who ruled the Netherlands from 1890-1948. White dominated the funeral because Wilhelmina wanted it that. She believed death was "but a threshold to the life hereafter" and no one should mourn her.
