Fred Goerner and Paul Mantz Inspecting Generator
(Original Caption) Evidence in Amelia Earhart Case. San Francisco, calif.: A possible new clue in the disappearance of aviatrix Amelia Earhart 23 years ago was turned up July 1st. A CBS correspondent of the San Mateo (Calif.) Times Fred Goerner, (right), reported an airplane generator found on bottom of Saipan Bay in the South Pacific, may be one of the ones that was Miss Earhart's lane when her round-the-world flight failed in 1937. At left is Paul Mantz, the flier who outfitted Miss Earhart's plane, who says the generator (on table) may be the one he installed. Goerner went to Saipan to check the evidence. Mantz is to make more extensive check on the numbers on the generator to verify his claim.
