Canadian Landing At Dieppe: American And British Soldiers

FRANCE - AUGUST 01: End of August 1942. After the failure of the Allied landing in Dieppe, British and American prisoners are being led by German soldiers into a camp at the foot of the medieval fortress. On August 19, 1942 5000 Canadian soldiers, 1100 English and 50 Americans set off in the hope of breaking through the German lines. In fact, for the Allied chief of staff, it was a question of testing the continental defenses. 4000 men were killed, wounded or made prisoner. Only a very few were able to be re-embarked and escape the carnage. (Photo by Keystone-France/Gamma-Keystone via Getty Images)
