During her time as a state representative in 2013, Rashida Tlaib indepentently tested a toxic substance that was polluting the air and Detroit River called petroleum coke, or petcoke, proving it was harmful. As a result then mayor of Detroit Dave Bing, stepped in and made Marathon properly store the petcoke piles so they wouldn't be polluting the neighborhoods and river. As a result of the industry in Southwest Detroit and cities further down the Detroit River asthma rates and other respatory issues are extremely common.
