The city was under Russian occupation for 33 days. Liberated on March 31, 2022. Bucha became a symbol of the atrocities of the Russian army in Ukraine. According to the estimates of the Ukrainian authorities, more than 400 people died in the city, and together with the Bucha Raion, the number of victims exceeds 1,400. Russia launched a large-scale invasion over Ukraine on February 24, 2022, triggering the largest military attack in Europe since World War II.
