CDM is one of the mechanisms in article 12 in the Kyoto Protocol that allows industrial nations to meet their CO2 emission reduction targets by investment and transfer of sustainable technologies in development countries. In Zambia, Lusaka Sustainable Energy project , is providing house-holds with cook stoves, financed by RWE Power AG, the German power utility. The project in Zambia seeks to switch charcoal consuming households to sustainable harvested sticks of wood used for the cookers, and by doing that saving trees and the environment in Zambia. House-holds are save a substantial amount of money every month by not buying charcoal, which usually is a major cost for poor people in the country.
