Vauxhall steam locomotive, 1834.
UNITED KINGDOM - JUNE 10: Coloured drawing (scale 1:8) showing the Dublin & Kingstown Railway locomotive 'Vauxhall'. In 1831 an Act of Parliament was passed enabling the formation of a railway company in Ireland to link the port of Dublin with Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire). The line was opened in 1834, with the first trial of the steam engine Vauxhall, hauling a small train filled with passengers, undertaken between Dublin and the Martello tower in Kingstown, in October of that year. The trial was a great success, with the locomotive reaching a speed of around 31 mph. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
