Christchurch Cathedral remains in ruins
Christchurch Cathedral remains in ruins after it was badly damaged during the February 22, 2011 earthquake in Christchurch on February 21, 2012 nearly one year after a 6.3 quake hit New Zealand's second largest city, killing 185 people, flattening office blocks, buckling roads and bringing historic buildings crashing down. More than 60 percent of the masonry heritage buildings that defined Christchurch, creating what locals called "a little slice of England", have been lost and many more are severely damaged and need expensive reinforcement.
