Beijing's Migrant Schools

BEIJING, CHINA - JULY 21: (CHINA OUT) Children of migrant workers study at a migrant school on July 21, 2011 in Beijing, China. Chinese cities have roughly 120 million migrant workers, mostly farmers or from rural regions in China. Migrant workers have to accept the lowest-paid and riskiest jobs. It is estimated in Beijing that one-quarter of all children in school are from migrant families, and Shanghai has a similar number of children moving into the school system. Whilst the government provides so called Migrant Schools for these children, in recent times a number have had to close, citing a lack of safety for children, and no education prospects. The closure of schools has left children without an opportunity for schooling though, as many of the State schools are at capacity. Some estimates suggest that almost ten per cent of school-aged children from migrant families don't attend a school. (Photo by Guang Niu/Getty Images)
