A child looks at "martisor" to be sold at a spring fair in Bucharest February 22, 2012. Every March 1st, parents and children, men and women, politicians, artists, villagers or urban dwellers offer each other a "martisor" (in Romania) or a "martenitsa" (in Bulgaria) as a sign of friendship but mostly to celebrate the first day of spring. In Romania, thousands of students and young people make their own "martisoare" (plural of "martisor") and sell them on temporary markets that appear in every cities and towns a week before the event.
