Charlotte McConnell and Her Initiative to Bring "Diverse" Books, Including LGBTQ Topics, Into Classroom Libraries in Loudoun County Schools
STERLING, VA - NOVEMBER 8:
Charlotte McConnell's group, Equality Loudoun, is initiating an effort to keep on "diverse" books, including ones about LGBTQ issues, in classroom libraries in Loudoun County schools, Friday, November 8, 2019, in Sterling, VA. The effort has sparked an intense backlash from parents objecting to books about LGBTQ identities. Outraged parents have been showing up to school board meetings and demanding the books be removed, saying they are "sexually obscene" and promote "transgender ideology." Advocates for the books say it is important for LGBTQ students to see themselves reflected in the stories they read.
